2K Updates Borderlands, No Gamespy Removal... yet.

2K and Gearbox have released a patch to Borderlands today that is aimed to just let you know how the Gamespy update plans are moving along. The update is only available for Steam users, but never fear, Gearbox is here!

The noted for the update are below, as seen on the 2K support site:

  • Removed SecuRom from the title and all DLC
  • Added a "Granting Tool" In the steam "Tools" section that turns a retail Borderlands disc into a Steam version of Borderlands. Need help with that? Here's our guide.
  • "News Ticker" added to the main menu to give you updates on the Multiplayer restoration updates.
  • Imported SecuRom DLC keys into Steam, so if you bought DLC outside of Steam, activate it within Steam and get your matching content.

Indeed, you read that right. All DRM has been removed from Borderlands and its DLC. You can also activate your retail Borderlands game disc on Steam using the Borderlands Granting Tool in the Tools section of Steam. Additionally, all SecuROM protected DLCs can be activated on Steam using the key provided to unlock the DRM on those products. Pretty awesome stuff!

Unfortunately, this update does not completely remove Gamespy and multiplayer on the game will be broken until they release a Gamespy removing, Steam integrating patch to the game sometime soon.

Teaser Image of the New UT Released!

Epic has released a teaser image of a meshed part of one of the new UT maps. This was done by Chris Perna to show an industrial themed map as inspiration for the community and to show the direction that Epic is looking. He did say during the live stream yesterday that this isn't final and that it might need more work but it is a good representation of the direction they want to go with things.

PErsonally, I think this is excellent and exactly what we have been asking for. You can see that most of the details are out of the way and up higher. The play areas are clear of junk and the lighting is impeccable. If you watch the livestream and see them moving around this area, it looks flat out fantastic. Graphically, it blows everything else I've seen completely out of the water. Good job, guys!

Tekken 7 Powered by Unreal Engine 4

Namco Bandai are the latest to announce they are using Unreal Engine 4, this time for Tekken 7, the next installment in the storied Tekken franchise. Katsuhiro Harada, TEKKEN series Executive Producer/Game Director at BANDAI NAMCO had this to say:

The power and flexibility means that we can focus our efforts on making TEKKEN 7 the best possible game without worrying about spending time creating a stand-alone graphic engine. With Unreal Engine 4, we could rapidly achieve visual quality expected on next-gen platform and go beyond it. Not only is Unreal Engine 4 powerful and easy to use, but it allows us to immediately bring TEKKEN 7 to any platform we desire.

Taka Kawasaki, Studio Head at Epic Games Japan, states:

The Tekken franchise is beloved and we couldn't be more excited to be working with the talented team at BANDAI NAMCO. This marriage is perfect - the most powerful engine in gaming along with one of the most enduring brands in fighting games. We have no doubt that these forces coming together will yield fantastic results.
